Justine Cal | 14th - 23rd of August

– 14th - 23rd of August

Justine Roland-Cal is a self-taught neurodiverse artist who has been painting for 40 years. She has developed a large body of work both figurative and abstract exploring many aspects of her life, daily encounters, and her political voice. Many of her paintings represent a personal response to what concerns her as a woman and humanitarian. She uses found materials; pieces of wood, discarded doors and large-scale canvasses, and paints with passion and spontaneity using acrylics and a striking colour palette. Her work is raw and fantastical, culminating in vibrant expressionistic canvases as well as insightful documentation. Justine has been exhibiting since 1994 in numerous cultural centres and galleries in London and Paris, including Musée de la Création Franche in Bordeux (collections of outsider and self-taught artists). More recently she exhibited at The New Art Gallery Walsall and Christies Auctioneers, as part of ‘Shelter’, Outside In’s National Open Exhibition.

For this exhibition Justine has chosen a selection of paintings, both old and new, from her large collection of artworks, reflecting her unique connection with the world around her.

More recently she has been using street photography (her other passion) as a catalyst to inspire her work; adding a different dimension to her practice, blending the everyday realities of life with a vivid imagination; taking the essence of each black and white image, a moment in time, and transforming it into a colourful, dreamlike representation. A series of abstracts equally as vibrant will complement these works.
