Woodturning

Bedknobs, broomsticks, legs & twiddly things

Neve Thompson – May 2020

Our father's old Windsor chair had its back snapped off the other day, but a very heavy guest. As it turned out, the support holding the arm had woodworm. Oscar turned a replacement from a piece of old elm and honestly, you just can't tell that the chair was ever broken. Impressed, of Islington.

We spin it right round, baby, right round…

One of our favourite machines in the workshop is our 70 year old woodturning lathe. Use of it takes years of practice and is one of the most therapeutic tasks we carry out.

We are able to reproduce almost any turned item from the smallest finial, drawer knob to chair or table leg or baluster or balustrade - so if you have mislaid a knob or broken a leg - have no fear.

We can copy almost any shape and design and a very wide variety of timbers and once we've finished distressing and polishing it, you'd never tell it from the original

Metal Lathe

We've also got a little engineering lathe and can spin-up most small items that you could need from steel, brass and other metals. It means we can turn tiny brass knobs and finials, make our own bolts and screws and turn just the right sized steel dowel. So a decorative twiddly bit from the top of your grandfather clock or a tiny handle from a secret drawer hidden in your old Georgian bureau is no problem!

PAYING US A VISIT TO DISCUSS A POTENTIAL RESTORATION PROJECT

If you want to pop-in to discuss a potential repair, rather than emailing with photos or telephoning, then please stick to weekdays as our restorers only work Monday to Friday and our general shop staff are not restoration experts.

DROPPING OFF FOR REPAIR OR COLLECTING COMPLETED ITEMS

If we've already given you an estimate for the repair or restoration of your furniture and asked you to bring it into the workshop, you can do so from our Islington workshop, 7 days a week, Monday - Saturday 10-6 and Sundays 11-5. Similarly, if we've completed the restoration and told you it's ready, you can also collect during these times, without appointment.

IMPORTANT - You can't leave items without our having already given you a price and scheduled your work, as our workshop has limited storage space - so please don't bring things in on spec and hope to be able to leave them. You'll get turned away and then be cross with us - and we don't want that ;)

Still unsure?

Not sure if it's something we would restore?

don’t worry, that's our job, not yours and we're very good at it too! We're here to provide you with free, honest advice.

We'll tell you what it is, where it's from and whether or not it's worth restoring. We really can restore most things -

you'd be surprised at the state of things we've been able to rescue.
