Stripping of furniture

Stripped by hand with love (& blisters).

Liz Wilson – 12th November 20

My Victorian chest of drawers was covered in thick layers of paint that I suppose my mother thought was a great idea in the 70s. After Noah's workshop stripped it all by hand, back to the mahogany. It's now French polished and looking gorgeous. Thanks After Noah.

Don't try this at home, kids…

Stripping furniture, especially chairs, is a slow, messy and laborious task that burns your hands. It's now not even possible for members of the public (because it's illegal!) to buy paint stripper that actually works. So that means if you've got a hope of getting the paint off, you need someone with access to the bad stuff that can get do it. And that's us!

At least half of the items we're asked to strip have already been started by the owner, who's given in - defeated and tired, wishing they'd never begun. I'm not exaggerating.

All the stripping we carry out is done by hand and will then need to be scraped, sanded and prepared prior to refinishing. It's not so much that it's difficult (it can be) it's that it takes patience and that's what you pay us for.

Stripping of polished finishes should be considered a last resort, when the finish is worn or damaged beyond repair.

nB. Very few wooden items can be dipped in a tank - not something we do - and must be made from pine if they are not to be damaged. All other dipped timber is discoloured and glued joints frequently eaten away.

PAYING US A VISIT TO DISCUSS A POTENTIAL RESTORATION PROJECT

If you want to pop-in to discuss a potential repair, rather than emailing with photos or telephoning, then please stick to weekdays as our restorers only work Monday to Friday and our general shop staff are not restoration experts.

DROPPING OFF FOR REPAIR OR COLLECTING COMPLETED ITEMS

If we've already given you an estimate for the repair or restoration of your furniture and asked you to bring it into the workshop, you can do so from our Islington workshop, 7 days a week, Monday - Saturday 10-6 and Sundays 11-5. Similarly, if we've completed the restoration and told you it's ready, you can also collect during these times, without appointment.

IMPORTANT - You can't leave items without our having already given you a price and scheduled your work, as our workshop has limited storage space - so please don't bring things in on spec and hope to be able to leave them. You'll get turned away and then be cross with us - and we don't want that ;)
