This latest presentation brings together works that reflect an ongoing engagement with landscape, offering a vivid and personal response to the rhythms of the natural environment.
Working in coloured pencil, pastel, and graphite, Marc Southey’s drawings capture the character and energy of North London through a distinctive and dynamic visual language.
Rooted in long-term familiarity with the area, Southey’s work draws on favourite places including Hampstead Heath, Kenwood, and the Parkland Walk, as well as other local green spaces shaped by his regular running routes. The current work reflects an ongoing interest in the memory of places revisited over time, observing how they shift through the seasons and gradually transform. This approach takes inspiration from artists such as Constable, whose repeated studies of familiar settings sought to interpret and reimagine the environments they knew intimately.
His practice balances observation and memory, resulting in works that feel both immediate and atmospheric. Many begin as quick sketches made in situ, capturing fleeting moments, later developed in the studio into fluid drawings that explore movement, colour, and place.
