This show (my first solo exhibition), features watercolour and pen/pencil works created during concerts, rehearsals and concert intervals for Islington Festival of Music and Art. I have been collaborating with the Festival as artist in residence since 2022 and have very much enjoyed this as a means of getting to observe and meet so many fascinating and talented musicians and their instruments! The drawings are done on the spot while immersed in the music. I try to work from memory as much as possible rather than from photos and particularly like to note and record the intricacies of the structure of the various instruments and the technique used to play them in terms of expression, body posture and hand position of the musicians. As an amateur clarinettist and classical guitarist I appreciate the years of practice and effort that have gone into making it all look second nature so allowing the music to shine through, and hope to show this without too much accurate detail in the drawing. I also like to include the audience and non musician festival team members including caterers and concert venue features as they are such an important part of the whole experience.
Works from other areas of my art practice will also be on display including sketches of London/other locations, musicians, dancers, poets, life drawing, portraits, reportage, sport and volunteers.
