Marenka Gabeler

11th - 20th October –

I am a multi-disciplinary artist (painting, drawing, photography, performance) with painting at the chore of my practice. Themes I explore are to do with family, motherhood, memory, psychological states and psychologies of the self and other. For one of my projects I wore a school uniform for an entire year to explore Englishness, researching projected identity. An ongoing thread in my work is about the face and how we hide and reveal through the face. Current work touches on mental health; on reactivity, and acceptance. My art projects have taken me on residencies in Indonesia, Japan, Syria and Majorca, amongst other places. My work has been exhibited internationally in New York, London and Amsterdam and is held in high profile collections such as Alison Jacques Gallery, Caldic Collection and Torch Gallery in the Netherlands. I am also a portrait painter and take on portrait commissions.

Capturing the Fleeting Essence of Childhood

My idea is to focus on my portraits and have the space filled with faces. Many of my portraits are in miniature, which would suit the space as its quite intimate. They are mostly of children, which would really suit the setting of After Noah, it being a toy shop. In addition I could sit in the space for a couple of sessions and draw anyone who'd come by and like to sit for me. Or I could be working on my current portrait painting so you can see teh artist working on site, at an easel.
