Ralph Whitehead

8 - 17 November –

Ralph is a visual artist working along the boundary of fine art and fashion photography. His work has several running themes relating to duality, transformation and exploration of process. His work searched for relationships between light and darkness and opposites in general, exploring a dynamic of interaction between tension and serenity. Originally coming from a science background he retains an interest in experimentation with ideas and materials, both of which form integral part of his practice and look to push the boundaries of the medium.

Shining Darkness - a journey into a black sun.

"One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The latter procedure, however, is disagreeable and therefore not popular.” - Carl Jung The relationship between light and darkness, so very central to the practice of photography in its rawest analogue physical form is a useful tool to explore our own struggle with this duality. By seeking a dialogue between the soothing and the disquieting, the darkness a more familiar place and one from which to draw wisdom. Knowing darkness is and forming a relationship with it is a meaningful step towards understanding of our surroundings and ultimately ourselves.
