Chromcraft was founded in St Louis, MO, in 1908. Initially called the American Fixture and Showcase Company, the company became Chromcraft in 1937, named after its first range of Dinette Furniture. The 1950s and 1960s saw Chromcraft’s dinettes and home furnishings increase in popularity, with the company rapidly expanding in size, outgrowing their original facilities in St Louis. The 1960s saw them become the leading dinette manufacturer, as well as introducing the Sculpta Star Trek Dining Suite, producing high quality furniture at a lower cost than market competitors. To keep up with demand, a new factory was built in Senatobia, Mississippi, with initially 250,000 square feet, and later expanding t0 640,000 square feet.
Throughout the 1970s Chromcraft became a household name by heavily investing in advertising, placing them in popular magazines like Better Homes and Gardens, as well as sponsoring popular game shows on NBC-TV, CBS-TV, and ABC-TV. Chromcraft also became a world leading manufacturer of dinette furniture, at it’s height producing 20,000 tables and 500,000 chairs yearly, and exporting to Canada, Australia, England, Germany, Israel, Japan, Spain, Netherlands, Mexico, Hong Kong, and South Africa.
The ensuing decades saw Chromcraft expanding its furniture ranges to include casual dining, occasional, bedroom and upholstered furniture, as well as merging with another company and listing on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange. The 2000’s saw them work with government entities, to produce furniture for NASA and other administrations, as well as working with airports and other commercial enterprises. Chromcraft continue to expand as a company, producing furniture for both home and work settings.
