Set of 4 teak and afromosia slatted back, dining chairs, produced by G Plan from 1970 onwards. Manufactured in High Wycombe, England, by E Gomme Ltd.
The chairs have a solid afromosia frame and legs, and teak slats that form the chair back. The chairs have square, tapering, front legs, a bowed top rail, and serpentine slats. The seats have been reupholstered in material sympathetic to the chairs' design.
The chairs are most probably the Model 4540 Slatted-back Chair, designed by L. G. Dandy, and launched in 1970. They were an incredibly popular chair and were produced until at least 1987. Unusually, it seems that the Model 4540 Chairs were produced as part two different ranges; they were produced as part of the Sierra Range from 1970-1974, and then the Fresco Range from 1975 onwards. When the Sierra Range was launched around 1971, it was intended as an evolution and extension of the Fresco Range, and so was sold alongside, rather than replacing it. The Sierra Range was dropped in 1975, when E Gomme decided to focus on extending the Fresco Range, with some models from the former folded into the latter.
Our Model 4540 Dining Chairs feature G Plan’s Red Label (see photo), which was predominantly used on furniture made between 1965-1975. This dates the manufacture of our chairs between 1970 and 1975, meaning they could have been made under the banner of either the Sierra or the Fresco Range.
Photos are of chairs pre-restoration with old upholstery, new photos coming soon.
The chairs have been revived in our restoration workshop.
Whilst these chairs are in great condition, they are vintage, and as such have patination commensurate with their age.
