Lovely compact sideboard from G Plan's Tola and Black Range (often mistakenly referred to as the Librenza range). G Plan first listed this model in their October 1956 price list and is model number 887. Made in High Wycombe, England.
The sideboard is tola (African mahogany) veneer on engineered board, in a walnut brown and black finish; it features ebonised sliding doors and feet, as well as brass handles and fittings.
The main body of the sideboard consists of a large cupboard, with an internal, shaped, glass, shelf and sliding, ebonised doors, and a smaller cupboard with a fall front door, revealing a shelved interior. Above the large cupboard sits a slim drawer, felt lined, with two large compartments, as well as a moveable utensil organiser. Below the cupboards are two more drawers; the larger drawer on the left is split into two compartments.
All of the drawers and cupboards feature brass, cast, drop handles and fittings. The drawers are constructed with machine, dovetail joints, mahogany lined sides and plywood bottoms. The whole unit is raised on square, tapering legs and a shaped front rail, and is finished in clear lacquer.
The sideboard has a E Gomme Gold embossed stamp, which means that it would be have been made between 1956-1965. (This particular stamp was used on furniture made between 1952-1965).
Models from G Plan’s Tola and Black range appeared in catalogues from 1956 and continued to be sold well into and through the 1960s. The range featured the use of the wood tola (African mahogany), ebonised wood and brass fittings.
