Description

Teak, extending, dining table, designed by H.W. Klein and manufactured in 1968 by Bramin Møbler, Bramming, Denmark.

This elegant dining table, has been expensively made and shows characteristically excellent Danish design and craftsmanship. This compact rectangular table extends with a leaf, stored underneath the top; it comfortable sits four people when closed, and six to eight when open. The table top is teak veneer on engineered board; the veneer is a well chosen teak with an unusual grain, and is of a high quality. The table has a solid teak moulded, curved edge that forms the apron. Its beautifully crafted corners have mitred edges, and rosewood tongues: a lovely decorative touch, as well as a joining technique that keeps the mitred joint together. The table is support by solid teak, turned, tapering legs, that are removable and join securely to the top by threaded steel dowels screwing into a threaded and sunk steel plate. Table is marked underneath with the Bramin label as well as it’s manufacture date: 17th May 1968.

This refined table would perfectly complement early and mid-twentieth century, as well as contemporary, interior design schemes.

Details

Henry Walter (H.W.) Klein was born in Norway in 1919. After serving in the Norwegian Royal Marines, Klein pivoted to cabinetmaking, and in 1949 he moved to Denmark to study interior design at the Tekniske Skile in Frederikberg where he trained under the eminent Danish designer and architect Finn Juhl. After finishing school in 1952, Klein returned to Norway where he established his own furniture and interiors business, designing and producing dining furniture characteristic of the Danish Modern style. It was in the 1950s that Klein also became interested in making plastic furniture, even designing a new manufacturing method to do so - it was during this time that he began working with the manufacturer Bramin, in order to finance his endeavours. In 1960s Klein, along with his family, moved to Denmark so that he could work full time at Bramin, remaining at the company until it’s closure in 1980, whereupon the Klein’s moved to San Francisco.

Bramin Møbler was a furniture manufacturer, originating from in Bramming, Denmark, a town known for its progressive furniture industry. Originally known as N.A. Jørgensens Møbelfabrik, the company update its name in the late 1950s, to reflect a more contemporary brand image. Producing striking furniture, characteristic of the Danish Modern style, through the mid-twentieth century and into the 1980s, Bramin was one of Denmark’s larger furniture makers producing a wide range of furniture for the lounge and dining room, as well as distinctive sideboards and storage options. Bramin collaborated with some of the best designers of the modern era including Johannes Andersen, Hans Olsen, Kurt Østervig, and Frank Reenskaug, but their most successful partnership was with H.W. Klein with whom they worked closely from the 1960s until their closure. Bramin Møbler continued to be successful until the 1980s, when they were forced to close by the international financial crisis of that time. Today Bramin’s pieces are highly coveted items of furniture, straddling original design with exemplifying principles of the Danish Modern movement; human centred, elegantly simple, furniture, made with good quality materials.

This table has been restored. Whilst is in great condition, it is vintage, and as such has patination commensurate with its age.

Please note that due to the piece's age the internal leaves may be a slightly different colour to the rest of the table.
