Description
Teak writing bureau, with retractable desk, made in Britain by Times Furnishings, 1960s.
This stylish and compact bureau has a pull out desk, open shelving and a variety of drawers to store all your stationary and other essentials. The bureau’s body is teak veneer on engineered board and houses two sections, split by a desk. The upper section has an open shelf that sits on top of a shelf that is partly covered by a sliding door, this lovely design feature also functions as a way to conceal stationary; underneath both shelves are a nest of three small drawers. The sliding desk in the middle of the bureau is perfect for writing on, and it recedes neatly back into the unit when not in use. The sliding desk is teak veneer on engineered board, with solid teak lipping around the front and sides, and features a handy recessed finger pull. The lower section of the bureau is made from three graduated drawers. The bureau’s drawers all have teak veneer on engineered board fronts, with a balancing mahogany veneer. The drawers are constructed with dovetail joints and have mahogany sides. The bureau’s handles are all solid teak, and recess into the drawers and doors. The whole unit is raised on a square, tapering legged base made from solid teak.
This piece reflects the functional yet elegant design of mid-twentieth century British Modernism and would work excellently within a mid-century, modern and contemporary interior design scheme.

Details:
The Times Furnishing Company is a lesser-known but respected British furniture maker and retailer, active throughout most of the Twentieth century. Founded by entrepreneur John Jacobs in the 1920s, much of the business was based on the ‘hire purchase’ model, that enabled people to ‘furnish now and pay later’. Hire purchase was a new phenomenon in the 1920s, and helped the growing number of working class people able to buy their own home, to also furnish it. The Times Furnishing Company had a flagship store on High Holborn, as well as outlets all around London and in the Greater London area, most notably in Slough and Romford, but also on Brixton Road, in Walthamstow and Stratford to name a few. The Times Furnishing Company was highly popular through the 1950s-1970s, producing well-crafted, modernist teak furniture that helped British people furnish their homes post-war. Although their popularity had declined by the end of the twentieth century, they were still operating in Slough as late as 2007.
