Iconic Danish wooden dining chairs, designed by Børge Mogensen for FDB Møbler. First produced in 1947, these enduring chairs are still manufactured today.

The Model J39 chairs, also known as Folkestolen or the People’s Chair, were designed with a focus on durability and simplicity, and to be used within both public and private spaces. These J39 chairs are made from solid walnut and feature envelope pattern Danish cord seats. The chairs have a solid walnut, carved, concave backrest and solid walnut, turned, cylinder shaped legs, strengthened by turned, tapering stretchers; one at the front and back, and two on each side. The backrest is screwed on to the uprights, with plugs covering the screw tops.

The Model J39 Chairs would sit well amongst a wide range of design schemes, including, early and mid century, Danish Modern and rustic.

The chair frames are waiting to be revived in our restoration workshop. The seats have been re-corded, following the pattern of the original design.

Whilst these chairs are in great condition, they are vintage, and as such have patination commensurate with their age.

Børge Mogensen’s J39 Chair, designed in 1947, is a much loved Danish design icon, celebrated for its minimalist elegance and robust craftsmanship. Mogensen’s intention was to make quality-conscious furniture design accessible to everyone, and this approach is really exemplified in the J39 Chair. A simplification of Kaare Klint’s Shaker inspired Church Chair from 1936, Mogensen’s intent was to reduce the design to its absolute essentials without compromising on comfort, quality or aesthetics. True to his intent, the J39’s are a lesson in simple elegance, with its perfect proportions and excellent comfort. Over the years, the People’s Chair has earned it’s nickname through it’s ubiquity in family homes and public spaces alike, including prestigious places like the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the School of Architecture. The J39 is still manufactured by furniture company, Fredericia: a company Børge Mogensen joined as founding designer in 1955.
