Description
Antique, tripod side table, featuring a Georgian carved oak base and a circular top, probably added in the 1920s. Most likely made in the United Kingdom.
This unique piece spans the years with style: its elegant base was most probably carved around the 1730s, with the carved oak top was replaced in the 1920s. The top is made from quartered oak, revealing the wood’s medullary rays, and is finished with a thumb moulded edge. It sits on a tripod, solid oak, hand made, base; its turned column and pad feet both following a classic design of the time. Underneath, the base has a contemporaneous wrought iron brace tying the legs together, secured in place with handmade nails.
This would have been a table made for the provinces, not the city; it is made from oak, which was abundant and cheaper than using mahogany (a popular wood for the upper classes in their city residences). However, the design follows the more expensive furniture of the time.
This idiosyncratic table will sit well within a range of interiors, from classic, rustic, to early and mid-twentieth century design schemes.
